Dallas is the Paulding County seat, and the county has grown fast for twenty-five years. The Census counted 81,678 people in Paulding County in 2000 and 168,661 in 2020. New subdivisions go in with short paved driveways and curb cuts at the street. The acreage lots next door still run hundreds of feet of gravel out to the road.

Dallas sits on Georgia Piedmont ground. The New Georgia Encyclopedia describes the Piedmont as low hills and narrow valleys. It says the bedrock lies under a thick layer of decomposed rock called saprolite. That saprolite is the red clay of Georgia.
The USDA described a soil series right at the county line. The type location for the Braswell series sits on GA-61, just south of the Bartow County line. That record puts those soils on slopes of 2 to 25 percent. It puts rainfall on that ground at 46 to 60 inches a year.
GA-61 is the road we come down from Cartersville. Clay holds water, and soft ground under asphalt lets pavement sink and break at the edges. We grade the site for drainage first, then compact the stone base in layers. Hot mix goes down with our own paver and gets rolled while it is hot.
Paulding County has two kinds of driveway and they sit side by side. In the newer subdivisions off Cedarcrest Road, drives are short and tie into a paved street. Those jobs come down to a clean tie-in at the road and a flat pad at the garage.
Out toward New Hope, Nebo, Yorkville and Braswell the lots get big. A drive can run several hundred feet to the road, and most of those are still gravel. Gravel on a Paulding County hill washes downhill in hard rain. Pave it and that stops: no more mud, no more dust.
Tar and chip paving is the other way to harden a long drive. Liquid asphalt goes down over a prepared base and stone chips get rolled in. It suits farm lanes and long rural drives, and it keeps a country road look. Several homes on one shared gravel road is private road paving, and owners often split it.
Most business traffic in Dallas runs on US-278 and GA-6. The pair bypasses town to the south as Jimmy Campbell Parkway, then runs toward Hiram as Charles Hardy Parkway. GA-61 comes through town as Nathan Dean Boulevard. Closer to the courthouse square, Merchants Drive carries shopping centers of its own.
A lot on a corridor like that takes constant turning traffic. Cars stop and turn in the same few spots, and that is where the surface gives out first. Dumpster pads and truck lanes carry the heaviest loads, so those areas get built heavier.
Where the base under a lot is still sound, an asphalt overlay puts a new surface over the old one. Where the base has failed, those areas come out and get rebuilt first. We plan the work in phases with you so the business stays open. Striping goes back on after paving, and sealcoating comes later once the asphalt has cured.
It depends on the road your driveway touches, and three different owners are possible. US-278, GA-6, GA-61, GA-120 and GA-381 are state routes through Dallas and Paulding County. The Georgia Department of Transportation controls connections to those. County roads belong to Paulding County, and streets inside the city limits belong to the City of Dallas.
GDOT's driveway regulations are plain about it. A permit is required before any construction work or non-routine maintenance inside the state highway right of way. That covers grading and drainage work, and widening or moving a driveway you already have. GDOT also puts upkeep of the pipe and driveway on the property owner, out to the road pavement.
Paulding County's Department of Transportation looks after about 1,100 miles of county road. Its published rule for utility work is that authorization comes first, before construction inside county right of way. Ask the county the same way about a driveway connection, and we build to what the road owner wants.
