Kennesaw sits on rolling red clay in northwest Cobb County, on the Georgia Piedmont. Kennesaw Mountain rises to 1,808 feet just southeast of the city limits. The town grew from about 5,000 people in 1980 to more than 33,000 by 2020. Almost all of that came as subdivisions, so most driveways here date from the 1980s through the 2000s.

The ground under most of Kennesaw is Piedmont red clay. The USDA soil description for it shows a sandy loam surface over a red clay subsoil. The Southern Piedmont takes about 48 inches of rain in a normal year. All of that has to get off the pavement and away from the clay.
Wet clay turns slick and soft, and it ruts under a wheel. A saturated clay subgrade carries a load poorly, so the pavement over it cracks and settles. On the slopes around Kennesaw Mountain, the same clay washes where water runs across a drive. Where a drive crosses a low spot or a ditch line, a pipe may need to go under it.
So the base and the drainage decide how long pavement lasts here. We grade the site first to send rain off the pavement. Then the stone base goes down in layers and gets compacted. The hot mix is laid with our own paver and rolled while it is hot.
Most Kennesaw driveways sit in subdivisions off Old 41 Highway, Cherokee Street, Nowlin Road and Bells Ferry Road. Legacy Park alone holds a string of smaller neighborhoods. These are short drives, often with a turnaround or a parking pad at the house. Some subdivision streets here are private, and the owners or the HOA keep those up rather than the city or the county.
West of town, out toward Kennesaw Mountain, the lots get bigger and the ground gets steeper. Long drives on a grade wash out when water has nowhere to go. A steep drive needs the grading and the drainage settled before any asphalt goes down.
A driveway from the 1990s with a sound base is often a candidate for an overlay instead of a tear out. Asphalt Institute guidance puts a driveway overlay at 1.5 to 2 inches of surface mix. Where the cracking has spread into a pattern like alligator skin, the base below has failed. An overlay will not hold on that, and we will say so when we measure the drive.
Kennesaw's shopping sits on a few corridors. Town Center at Cobb opened on Barrett Parkway in 1986, and centers spread out around it from there. Cobb Parkway, which is US 41 and State Route 3, carries another commercial strip through town.
Chastain Road runs up to Kennesaw State University, which enrolls more than 51,000 students across its two campuses. Cobb County International Airport at McCollum Field sits off McCollum Parkway on the same side of town. The lots through all of it take steady car traffic and heavy delivery trucks.
A lot that was paved when its center was built has years of traffic on it now. We pave new lots, replace failed ones, put overlays on sound lots and stripe them after. We plan the work in phases with you so the business can stay open. Where the surface is still sound, sealcoating and crack filling buy time before a bigger job.
Three road owners can be involved, and it comes down to the road you tie into. The City of Kennesaw maintains the streets and right of way inside the city limits. Cobb County DOT approves driveways onto a Cobb County road. Its own rules put roads inside city boundaries and state routes outside that.
State routes belong to GDOT. Cobb Parkway is US 41 and State Route 3, and part of Barrett Parkway carries the State Route 5 Connector number. GDOT requires a permit before construction work in the state highway right of way. Its rules put a residential driveway on a state route at 14 feet wide at the minimum and 20 feet at the most.
A Kennesaw mailing address does not always mean city limits. The Town Center district, roughly bounded by Cobb Parkway, Chastain Road, McCollum Parkway, Bells Ferry Road and Barrett Parkway, is unincorporated Cobb County. Cobb County's stormwater fee runs on impervious area, and the county's definition counts graveled and compacted surfaces along with paved ones. Kennesaw runs its own stormwater utility inside the limits.
The road owner's engineering office sets these rules, and we build to what they require. Georgia law also says to file a locate request with Georgia 811 before anyone digs. Ask about both before the work starts.
